Abstract

They have several useful mathematical properties that greatly facilitate the modelling of frequency-dependent sinusoidal sources such as electrical power systems. Like the use of integers or real numbers, complex numbers are used to enable solving complex equations of numbers that are the square roots of negative numbers and to simplify mathematical problems.

Aim

To introduce a concept of complex number, to show students operations with complex numbers, to introduce algebraic and polar forms and to make sure students know how to do operations with complex numbers.

Learning outcomes

  1. Represent complex numbers algebraically and geometrically
  2. Perform basic mathematical operations
  3. Prove basic properties of complex numbers in polar forms.

Previous knowledge of mathematics
